Removing sunscreen from wool
Avobenzone is a common ingredient in sun screen. When this sets in your clothes and gets in contact with the iron in water, rust colored stains may appear. The best thing you can do to avoid stains is to steer clear of this chemical. But if they are already there, there are a few methods you can use to try and remove them. Baking soda, for example!
Here's how you do it:
- Pour baking soda on the stain
- Let it sit for 30 minutes to absorb the worst of the oils
- Brush off the baking soda and rub dish soap on the stain
- Let this mixture sit for five minutes
- Dry off the excess with a moist towel
Lemon and salt is another good alternative. We suggest testing this on a small, less visible area first, as the lemon can bleach the color of the garment.
Here's how you do it:
- Rinse the stain in cold water
- Squeeze lemon juice on the stain
- Pour salt on top
- Let this lie overnight
- Wash the garment as you normally would
